Don’t you worry because I’m going to help you figure out what’s going to be best for you. You’ll know exactly what type of protein your body needs!

To make it simple, I’m going to break down the types of protein powders into two categories: whey and plant-based.

What is Plant-Based Protein?

When talking about different proteins, they are usually named after where the protein comes from.

In this case, plant-based proteins are…yeah, you guessed it…derived from plants.

That being said, there are many different sources of plant protein can come from. Here are a few common ones:

  • Peas
  • Rice
  • Hemp
  • Sunflower

Each protein from these plants is unique and will give your body different nutrients that can aid in a variety of things.

What is Whey Protein?

Whey protein is one of the two main proteins that are derived from milk (the other being casein).

You know when you open your yogurt and see that liquid floating on top? That’s whey!

Once collected, the whey goes through many different processes and eventually turns into the protein powder that you see today.

Now that we have a basic understanding of what each protein is, let’s break both of them down and see which one is best for you.

1. Is Whey or Plant Protein More Easily Digested and Absorbed?

Plant-Based Protein

Like with all of those TV dating shows, we’re all searching for our perfect match.

Finding your match with protein requires you to see how your body responds to it. If every protein you drink gives you no results and you find your stomach constantly in knots, then you probably aren’t a match.

Plant-based proteins are the perfect match for anyone facing digestive problems. They contain fiber and digestive enzymes, which help ease digestion and absorption, leaving your stomach relaxed and satisfied.

Most plant proteins are also hypoallergenic, meaning it’s very unlikely your body will respond negatively to them.

Whey Protein

Since whey protein comes from milk, it contains lactose, which is a milk sugar molecule. In our small intestines, we create a digestive enzyme called lactase to break down the milk sugar molecule so it is easily digested.

Here lies the problem, though. It’s very common, as a person ages, to secrete less lactase. This makes it difficult for our bodies to digest lactose, causing abdominal discomfort and gas. Other people are simply intolerant or allergic to lactose.

If some of us struggle digesting lactose, it makes it hard for our bodies to absorb the protein we need.

The Best Choice For You

Even though whey protein is an excellent option for workout and weight loss goals, depending on how your body tolerates it will determine which type of protein is best for you.

If you want a carefree, worry-free option that you know won’t give you tummy issues, plant protein is the way to go.

2. Am I Getting Enough Protein?

Plant-Based Protein

To assure that your body works properly, it needs complete proteins.

In order to be labeled as a complete protein, a protein needs to have all of the nine essential amino acids.  These nine essential amino acids are not formed in your body and can only be obtained through diet or supplements.

Getting a complete plant-based protein can be a little tricky. Some plant-based proteins on the market today don’t offer complete proteins. For example, pumpkin protein by itself doesn’t have all 9 essential amino acids.

When looking for plant-based protein, it’s best to look at those that have a blend of different types of plant proteins. It’s through this variety that you get all nine essential amino acids.

Whey Protein

Here’s where whey protein is slightly above the competition.

All animal proteins are complete proteins, and since whey is derived from milk, it’s also a complete protein with all essential amino acids.

You can feel confident when looking at any whey protein that it’s a complete protein and will give all the amino acids that your body needs.

The protein that you get from each scoop will help your muscles repair and recover from your intense workouts and leave you feeling stronger.

The Best Choice For You

If you don’t want to worry about whether your plant-based protein has all nine essential amino acids, whey protein may be the easier pick. If you chose a plant based protein with all nine essential amino acids (like IdealRaw) then both types will get you the protein your body needs.

3. Does Whey or Plant-Based Protein Have More Nutrients?

Plant-Based Protein

Nutrient density is the measure of how many nutrients a food has per calorie.

Plant-based proteins are known for being very nutrient dense. This is one of the biggest differences between whey protein and plant-based protein.

With plant-based protein you are getting all your protein from plant sources, but all these sources have a lot more than just the protein in them. Many of the sources have loads of essential vitamins and minerals.

Whey Protein

Whey protein is perfect if all you want is protein. If you’re looking for something extra from your protein powder, though, it may be better to look somewhere else.

Since whey protein is made from milk, it’s lacking in a variety of nutrients. You, of course, get your calcium, your B-vitamins, and other vitamins and minerals, but its nutrient density isn’t as high as plant-based protein.

The Best Choice For You

Ounce for ounce, plant-based protein contains more nutrients for you. Whey protein definitely has some nutrients that you won’t find in plant-based proteins, but if you’re looking to get a greater amount of vitamins and minerals from your protein powder, plant-based protein is the way to go.

4. Does Whey Protein Cost Less and Taste Better Than Plant-Based Protein?

Plant Based Protein

To quote Spider-Man’s uncle, “With great quality comes great price.” (He said that right?)

Although that quote is a little off of what was really said, it still rings true for plant-based proteins.

With all of the different quality ingredients that go into plant-based protein blends, it tends to be a little higher price than your average protein. That is because the ingredients simply cost more to get.

Anything organic also tends to have the reputation that it tastes like you went outside and mixed a handful of dirt with water.

At IdealRaw, we recognized this problem and resolved to fix it. We are proud to claim IdealRaw as the best-tasting plant protein powder, ever! We know you’ll love the taste and you can rest knowing it’s naturally sweetened with stevia. Nothing artificial!  You’ll also get it for a fair price and a money back guarantee.

Whey Protein

I’ve looked into all of the different kinds of whey protein out there, and I have come to one conclusion with the price:

The price isn’t consistent.

While doing the research, I found whey protein powders that were outrageous amounts of money. On the other hand, I would also find whey proteins that were dirt cheap, but the quality was lacking.

Now looking at the taste.

One thing that was a huge pro in the whey protein department was the variety. There were so many options of flavors that you could choose from ranging from chocolate strawberry all the way to salted caramel delight. We all like choices, and whey has a lot!

The Best Choice For You

If you want quality, you’re going to have to pay for it regardless of the type of protein. You can find both cheap plant protein and whey protein, but it won’t provide you with the results you’re looking for and deserve. Whey does tend to run cheaper, though.

Taste is different for each person. Some enjoy whey flavors and variety better than plant protein. I personally LOVE IdealRaw’s protein. And the great thing about IdealRaw is if you don’t like the taste, you can send it back for a full refund!

You don’t even have to take my word for it. Check out all these other customers who LOVE the taste:

5. Additional Benefits

Plant-Based Protein

Plant-based proteins come with a host of different benefits besides a high-quality source of protein.

Some of the additional health benefits are

  • Reduced chance of high blood pressure
  • Healthy heart
  • Stronger immune system
  • Healthier skin

All these benefits come from the additional nutrients found in the different plants used in the protein blends.

If you are green conscious, you should know that it only produces 1/10th of carbon emissions compared to what it takes to make whey protein. Helping the earth one shake at a time is just that simple!

Whey Protein

There is something that we all struggle with and it’s becoming an epidemic.

It is what causes fitness junkies all the way to couch potatoes to raise their fists in the air shaking and screaming, “the struggle is real!”

The struggle is hunger.

Hunger can be the ultimate enemy of weight loss because it’s what drives us to the refrigerator late at night and makes us consume those extra unneeded calories.

Studies show that if a high amount of whey protein is consumed, levels of ghrelin, a hormone that signals the brain you are hungry, is reduced. This leaves you feeling full and satisfied for longer periods of time during the day.

The Best Choice For You

Both whey and plant protein have extra benefits, but depending on the type of plant protein you get, it may have more nutritional value. Both types can help you build muscle and satisfy hunger. It just depends if you want more than just that.
