4 Ways to #BeRealBeRaw

bereal be raw

We all know how important it is to feed our bodies only the good stuff–#organic4life amiright?

Do we ever think about what we are feeding the earth? There are so many toxins, trash, and torture that we put the earth through just by living in a first-world mindset. Part of being real and raw is taking care of the world we live in.

Try reusable bags at the grocery store.

reusable bag

Did you know that every year, somewhere between five billion and one trillion (yes, trillion) plastic bags are used worldwide? Each bag is only used for about twelve minutes and then they end up in landfills, oceans, and who knows where else for thousands of years. Yuck!

Next time you head to the grocery store, bring a canvas tote bag with you! They are super cute and they hold a ton of groceries. I like to bring at least two–one for produce and one for everything else!

You can even cut down on those thin plastic bags in the produce section. Only grab a bag if you will eat the part of the produce that would touch the bag! I won’t bag up lemons and limes, but I will bag up celery and lettuce.

Use reusable ziplock bags or Tupperware containers.

Just like those five billion to one trillion plastic bags chilling in landfills all over the world, plastic snack bags are contributing to pollution, too. Plastic bags may seem like the best option for packing kids’ lunches or bringing quick and easy snacks with you all day, but I promise you there are better options out there! Try using a reusable snack bag that you can wash out, or even one made of fabric! You could also pack things in little Tupperware or mason jars and wash them out to reuse them.

Take shorter showers.

On average, the water flows out of your shower head at 2.1 gallons per minute. If you like to take long showers, that 2.1 gallons add up. A 20-minute shower uses up 42 gallons of water! That is a crazy amount of clean water that is literally just going down the drain. Now, I’m all about a long, hot shower after a long, crazy day but there are ways to save some water!

There are pretty cool shower heads out there that will turn off the flow of water while keeping the temperature stable. You could then turn the water off while shampooing, and then turn it back on to rinse off.

If you like your shower head right where it is, try multitasking! If you are waiting for your conditioner to set, shave your legs and wash your face instead of standing there letting water go down the drain. If you’re doing a deep conditioning, consider popping on a shower cap and turning off the water altogether until the final rinse.

BYOWB (bring your own water bottle).

It’s no secret that plastic is filling up our landfills. Grabbing a plastic cup at work and throwing it away after one use contributes to those landfills. Disposable water bottles are another source of wasteful plastic. Instead of using plastic cups or bottles, save the landfills by bringing your own reusable water bottle everywhere you go. Bonus, you’ll stay hydrated if you carry it around with you everywhere!
