Benefits of Flax Seeds

Today, little seeds like flax are gaining popularity as superfoods. Flax seeds are an important ingredient included in our IdealRaw Organic Greens. But why? Don’t let their size fool you – flax seeds have many health benefits and are incredibly nutrient dense. Just one tablespoon of flax seeds contain:

  • Calories: 37
  • Protein: 1.3 grams
  • Carbs: 2 grams
  • Fiber: 1.9 grams
  • Total fat: 3 grams
  • Saturated fat: 0.3 grams
  • Omega-3 fatty acids: 1,597 mg
  • Vitamin B1: 8% of the RDI
  • Vitamin B6: 2% of the RDI
  • Folate: 2% of the RDI
  • Calcium: 2% of the RDI
  • Iron: 2% of the RDI

Flax Seeds are High in Omega 3’s

If you are vegan or vegetarian you may feel like you may be missing out on essential omegas 3’s without taking the insanely popular fish oil. However, you can also get a healthy dose of Omega 3’s through flax seeds, a whooping 1597 mg of Omega 3’s in fact! Specifically, Flax seeds are rich in alpha-linolenic acid, a type of omega-3 essential fatty acids found mostly in plants, which may help lower blood pressure and improve cholesterol. Not bad for a little seed!

Flax Seeds are High in Fiber

Flax seeds are also nearly 30% carbohydrates, most of which is fiber. (2g carbohydrates with 1.9g being fiber), both soluble and insoluble fiber. The soluble fiber in flax seeds helps to regulate digestion, blood sugar, and may help to lower blood pressure, improving cholesterol.

How does it do this? Soluble fiber dissolves in water to create a gel-like substance which then slows the absorption of food (to regulate digestion and keep you feeling full for longer) or sugars (to improve blood sugar) or  the “bad” cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (to improve blood pressure and cholesterol).

Flax Seeds are a Source of Plant Protein

It may come as a surprise to you to know that flaxseeds are also a good source of quality plant protein. Flaxseeds are 18% protein and rich in the amino acids; arginine, aspartic acid and glutamic acid. Overall, their amino acid profile is similar to protein rich soybeans, which is well known as being a good source of plant-protein.

Here at IdealRaw we use golden flaxseed protein in our organic plant-based protein formula because we recognise the many benefits of flax seeds so that you can get your daily dose in every scoop of IdealRaw! Try it here.

Flax Seeds Are Nutritious and Versatile

Besides being versatile in health benefits, flax seeds are also versatile as an ingredient. You can easily add a tablespoon over your morning cereal or oatmeal, into fresh baked breads or muffins, into your yogurt or granola. Another option is using flaxseed oil, which has a mild taste and a low cooking heat so it’s best in vinaigrettes or drizzled over food, similar like you might use olive oil.
