So earlier today I was mixing myself up an IdealRaw Protein shake, which are totally delicious, am I right?

But this time I just so happened to take a look at the ingredients and discovered something beautiful. What I found was an impressive superfoods list that just sang good health.

I’ll be honest. I’ve used a ton of different plant-based protein shakes out there. You name the brand and I’ve most likely had it in my pantry at one point. None of them ever had me thinking of going back for seconds, though.

But let’s get back to that great superfoods list I saw. Before I go off on the ingredients, it might help to know exactly what a superfood is and why they’re so good for you.

What Is a Superfood?

A superfood is any food (such as salmon, broccoli, or blueberries) that is rich in compounds (such as antioxidants, fiber, or fatty acids) considered beneficial to a person’s health.

A pretty broad definition, am I right?

You’re thinking, “Lisa, this means almost any food could be considered a superfood” and you would be spot on. Even though many foods are super healthy for you, it doesn’t necessarily mean that all are superfoods.

If you want to look for true superfoods, they need to match three criteria:

  • Nutrients: Superfoods are jam-packed with many different types of nutrients that improve health.
  • More good than bad: You shouldn’t find hardly any unhealthy fats, toxins, or artificial ingredients in superfoods.
  • Super Immunity Boosters: Superfoods have amazing immune system boosting properties to promote good health.

Are you starting to see the difference now? Foods like avocados may be good for you. Those little green guacamole makers have many healthy fats, are high in potassium and vitamin E, but are also high in calories.

It’s such a blessing to have so many great food choices for us to enjoy, but only a few are truly considered superfoods.

A Helpful Superfoods List

If you’re still not quite sure what makes a food super, just take a look at the last five ingredients on the IdealRaw protein tub for a few helpful hints:

Cranberries are amazing! They are perfect in salads, taste great in oatmeal, and are an absolute must in trail mix. They offer a sweet and tart combo to any meal and provide a beautiful color to any dish. Use them at Thanksgiving or Christmas, it doesn’t matter. I love cranberries!

Keep Your Body Clean

Most of us women will have multiple UTIs in our lifetime. When you or I get an UTI, bacteria lines the urinary tract walls which causes uncomfortable urination.

Cranberries have high levels of an organic chemical compound called proanthocyanidins, which may help support normal urinary health. Cranberries also have amazing antioxidants that help keep your body clean of nasty toxins and free radicals.

2. Pomegranates


Pomegranates actually offer a lot of similar benefits to cranberries, but they also have some great little perks of their own, besides their juicy little seeds.

Luckily for us, these seed-filled fruits can be super healthy for our blood and hearts. The antioxidants in pomegranates keep bad cholesterol from building up in your arteries.

Stomach Aches

Did you know that you can eat more than just the pomegranate seeds? The peel itself, as well as the leaves and the bark, can help calm an upset tummy.

The antioxidants found in pomegranates may help calm your stomach.

Just make yourself a tea with the leaves or drink some juice, and you’ll find that it does wonders for your stomach.

3. Broccoli

If your kids are anything like mine were just a few years ago, then you know when they find broccoli on their plates, they will do everything they can to avoid them.

But those little green machines shouldn’t be pushed off plates. Broccoli is actually one of the greatest vegetables out there, which is why it makes it into the IdealRaw shake and onto this great superfoods list.

It is actually in the same family of vegetables as kale. I’m sure you’ve heard about that healthy leaf once or twice. It actually shares a lot of similar qualities to kale as well.

Bone Health

Bone health is so important, especially as we get older. We constantly need to eat foods that are high in both calcium and vitamin K. Calcium keeps our bones strong and vitamin K helps our bodies to absorb that calcium.

Queue in the broccoli. It is packed to the brim with vitamin K and calcium. One little cup of broccoli gives you well over 100% of your vitamin K and a large helping of calcium too.

4. Wheatgrass


Another great hero on our superfoods list is wheatgrass. If you want to incorporate a super healthy food into your diet, this is one you should look at. It’s filled with vitamins and minerals and is a great source of chlorophyll.

Cleansing Properties

Wheatgrass can help keep our bodies alkalized and running properly. Its high concentration of chlorophyll and alkalinity helps get our bodies and cells balanced.

It’s really good for our skin, and many people actually soak in wheatgrass baths to help their skin look healthier.

It also helps with body odor too! If you notice your body may be smelling a little funky, it may be due to your digestive system being out of whack. Take some wheatgrass for a few days and it should help.

Your Liver

Because wheatgrass is so great at cleansing, your liver greatly benefits from it as well.

Our livers have to deal with all that we take into our bodies. Wheatgrass does wonders for your liver and keeps it working properly by cleansing it of all the nasty things we may eat and drink.

5. Beets


Last but not least are beets. Beets are just as fantastic and just as super as the other foods on the superfoods list. They may be a little funny looking, but they are great for your health.

Beet Your Heart Problems

If you want to kick the heart problems your doctor keeps warning you about, beets will definitely help.

They help form good cholesterol (HDL), which in turn, gets rid of your bad cholesterol. This means a happier, healthier heart that is able to do its job with little trouble.

Beets also contain the amino acid, betaine, which is great for keeping your blood vessels working properly. Betaine prevents its amino acid enemy, homocysteine, from increasing to unhealthy levels. Unhealthy homocysteine levels can actually harm your heart’s function, which is a big no no.

Respiratory Health

A great source of vitamin C comes from beets, but did you know that vitamin C is great for your lungs? You already know that vitamin C is great for your immune system, but it can help keep your respiratory health in line as well.

Increase Your Superfood Intake
