Wheatgrass and Wheatgrass Powder Benefits

There are seriously a ton of health benefits to be had from adding wheatgrass and wheatgrass powder into your life. I’ll talk about 5 of the biggest ones here.

1. Wheatgrass is a great source of nutrients

Wheatgrass is packed with nutrients!

-Beta-carotene: When ingested, our bodies convert beta-carotene into vitamin A. What’s so cool about that? Vitamin A is essential for healthy skin, our immune system, and for healthy eyes and vision.

-Chlorophyll: Chlorophyll is known as the green pigment found in plants. It can increase red blood cell production and help improve digestion through increasing the microbiome in the digestive tract.

Red blood cells are important because they carry oxygen throughout the body while also transporting carbon dioxide to the lungs to be released from the body. We need this transportation system because excessive amounts of carbon dioxide harms our organs.

-Calcium: Calcium helps build and maintain strong bones. Did you know that our bodies reach a peak bone mass around 30 years old? After the body peaks, it becomes harder to maintain bone density, which makes calcium crucial to help fight against osteoporosis.

-Iron: Iron improves cognitive function, helps circulate oxygen throughout the body, and can fight against anemia (when the body lacks enough red blood cells).

According to the World Health Organization, iron deficiency is one of the most common nutrient deficiencies in the world, so getting enough iron is key to support chemical processes in the body.

-Vitamin K: Vitamin K helps blood to clot. Repercussions of a Vitamin K deficiency include bruising easier, bleeding more, and bone weakness.

-Vitamin C: Obtaining enough Vitamin C improves the immune system and boosts it during cold and flu season. It can help you stay healthy during times of increased sicknesses in the community.

You know, like when you send your kids to school and they contract who knows what! The kids have an unrelenting cough and you are so desperately trying to avoid the sickness too. Vitamin C can help you fight for your health.

-Vitamin B12: Vitamin B12 keeps the body’s nerve cells and blood cells healthy. It also aids in the synthesizing of DNA… no big deal. Or in this case, a very big deal because DNA makes up who you are!

-Folic Acid: Folic acid is crucial for pregnant women and the development of a fetus. But even if you aren’t pregnant or even a women, folic acid is used to make and maintain red blood cells. It also helps in rapid cell division and growth throughout the body.

-Vitamin B6: This vitamin assists in proper brain development and function. We all age. This is a fact of life we cannot avoid or change… unfortunately. As we age, processes in the brain will slow, but if we get enough Vitamin B6, it may keep our minds sharp and delay the decline in brain function.

-Protein: Protein builds and repairs tissue in the body. It’s a building block for bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood. Getting enough protein in your body when maintaining an active lifestyle can be difficult at times, so yay for wheatgrass and it’s protein content!

2. Wheatgrass contains essential amino acids

Wheatgrass contains essential amino acids that our body needs when forming tissues, organs, muscles, skin, and hair.

Amino acids, or the building blocks of protein, also build enzymes which are catalysts in biochemical reactions.

Basically, amino acids regulate most metabolic processes in the body which is pretty important! If you want all systems firing correctly, amino acids will get you there!

3. Wheatgrass has antioxidant properties

Antioxidants are a wonderful thing because they prevent oxidative stress within the body.

Oxidative stress sets off chain reactions in the body that can and will destroy cells, so thank you wheatgrass for being amazing and containing antioxidant properties!

These properties stem from the chlorophyll, Vitamin C, and beta-Carotene found in wheatgrass and wheatgrass powder.

4. Wheatgrass can assist with digestion and gastrointestinal issues

Do you have gastrointestinal issues or are just looking for ways to improve your digestion? Wheatgrass can be a source to improve these two areas.

The amino acids lysine and glycine found in wheatgrass are both building blocks for enzymes to support digestion. Wheatgrass also contains fiber which helps move food through the digestive tract!

If you aren’t getting enough fiber, then odds are that your digestive tract is suffering. Chlorophyll is another tool to relieve intestinal issues. As stated earlier, chlorophyll can help improve digestion through increasing the microbiome in the digestive tract.

The microbiome of one’s gut includes both good and bad bacteria, so if this is off balance, digestion will not work at its full potential. This leads to discomfort and other problems. Not a fun situation!

5. Wheatgrass can aid in weight loss

Finding healthy ways to lose weight can be a challenge, am I right? Because wheatgrass is both low in calories and high in fiber, it can support your weight loss goals!

For every 4 grams of wheatgrass, there’s only 15 calories and 1 gram of fiber. This combination will keep you fuller longer making it easier to stick to your meal plan.

Wheatgrass also contains Vitamin B12; a vital vitamin for thyroid support. The thyroid, when working properly, boosts the metabolism and helps process food intake to maximize nutrient uptake and minimize fat storage.

An efficient metabolism will support weight loss as it effectively creates and uses energy.

Ways to eat wheatgrass

Wheatgrass is a great way to incorporate more greens into your diet. There are two forms of wheatgrass; raw wheatgrass or wheatgrass powder. They can be added into shakes, sprinkled in recipes, or you can bring out your wild side and ingest it from a shot glass (it’ll be strong but that’s part of the fun).

Should you eat wheatgrass in its raw state or do you eat it in powder form? That’s entirely up to you, but typically, wheatgrass powder is more concentrated than the raw form. This means that in a small dose, you can receive just as many benefits in the powder form than the raw form.
